Altar Crucifix

Altar Crucifix

Suspended above the altar on hand-forged chain is a Crucifix that is early medieval Italian in design. The cross itself (which measures 10 feet wide by 12 feet high) was constructed of steel tubing covered by half-inch plywood and decorated with hand-carved moldings. It is textured with a clay-like substance, painted, then artificially aged. The Corpus depicts the risen, victorious Christ.

Design Aspects of the Crucifix

The seven-foot figure of Christ was sculpted and painted by the artist Siena Porta.

Panels Reflect the Church Season

During the various liturgical seasons (Christmas, Easter, etc.) and special days (Palm Sunday, Pentecost, etc.), other panels properly reflect the season or day with rich liturgical symbols.

Panels Reflect the Church Season

Decorative Panels - Mark & Luke

Decorative panels adorn each of the four extremes of the cross. During Ordinary season, the panels depict the four Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John).

The Crucifix was constructed (under the direction of Ed Spires and Fr. Michael Boccaccio) by the Norwalk firm Show Motion, Inc. (principal artists: Bill Mensching, Mike Stephens, Jim Fossi, Tien Ma and Scott Stewart) and Scenic Art Studios (principal artists: Joe Forbes, Lynn Muniz, Greg Hill and Tim Tanzillo). Show Motion was responsible for the construction of the cross, while Scenic Art Studios handled the art, aging and painting of the panels.
