Tuesday,

September 19, 2006 -

Last Friday the last vertical slab from the east column of the tower was removed, and the difference in the two columns shows rapid progress. Work began on the west column and today our photographer was fortunate and caught the actual lowering of a slab from the west column. For that sequence of pictures, click here.

Thursday, September 14, 2006 - Following the lowering of the bell on Monday morning, cutting and removal of vertical slabs from the east column has progressed.

Monday, September 11, 2006 - Finally, the bell was taken down from the tower today at about 9 AM. Click here for pictures of the event.

Friday, September 8 - There has been little change in the appearance of the tower this week. Work has consisted in completing the drilling of 84 holes in the tower legs. Eye bolts will be inserted in these holes for attachment to the cable from the crane and the slabs of concrete will  be lifted safely off the tower after they are cut. The south slab above the bell has already been removed. After the north  slab is removed the bell will be removed and the towers demolished in sections.
Thursday and Friday,

August 31-September 1 -

The south side of the tower cap was removed on Wednesday, and work continues. The bell is now very visible.

Wednesday,

30 August, 2006 -

Work resumed today after the rainy spell. The crane was on the job, was attached, and cutting of the concrete began.

Friday, August 25, 1005 - Rain, so expect delays.

Thursday, August 24, 2006 - Installation of the cross-bracing continues.

Once the bracing is complete, the cap on the top of the tower will be removed; then the bell will be lowered. It now looks like that will occur sometime Monday afternoon. Watch this page for updates.

Following the lowering of the bell, the tower will be removed in sections, with that phase of the project requiring ten working days.

Wednesday, August 23, 2006 - It had been announced that the bell would be taken down today, but there were further delays. There has been no new date announced, but information will be posted here as soon as available.

In the meantime, progress was visible today in the bracing of the tower. The bracing is needed because when the top of the tower is removed, the individual columns would not be stable. Steel inserts were placed into the holes that have been drilled in recent days, and cross bracing is being attached to the inserts.

Wednesday morning - inserts in place.

Wednesday afternoon - crossbracing being installed.

Monday, 21 August 2006 - Not much new to report - photos show continuing wrapping of the tower and drilling of holes for the steel stabilizers

DEMOLITION...

Friday, 18 August 2006 - The removal of the bell from the tower, originally scheduled for today has been delayed, partly because of a day of rain and partly because of equipment malfunction. The new scheduled time for the bell removal is Wednesday August 23 at 3 pm. Watch this page for additional information as it becomes available.

Thursday, 17 August 2006 - It rained on Tuesday, but work resumed yesterday and today. Protection of the other parts of the building with tarps and plywood has been done, and application of an adhesive to the tower surface is underway.

Monday, 14 August 2006 - Workers arrived on the scene today to begin the task of dismantling the bell tower adjacent to the St. Phiip Church building. The tower, erected in the late 1960's, has been found to be corroded internally, and cracking of of the concrete has occurred. Repair is not practical, so after a period of roping off the area, and obtaining contractors' bids, removal of the tower has begun.

The early stages of the work involve protecting other parts of the building, and securing the tower so that demolition will occur in a controlled manner. The bell is scheduled to be removed on Friday August 18 at 2:00 pm.

Good-bye.

Plywood to protect the roof.
